As the country is advancing the welfare of the senior citizens through the Universal Pension Scheme for the elderly, Wella Medical Aid Society (Wemas), a new health insurance firm seeks to cover the gaps pensioners face in medical cover.

Chief executive officer for Wemas, McDonald Wella said as people grow old their health and vitality falls but often times this class of citizens is not properly cared for hence launching a product for the same.

The official launch of medical services as provided by Wella Medical Aid Society took place in Zomba.

The CEO said people in their golden ages are taken as a big risk by some health service providers as such denied an opportunity for proper medical care. He said his firm has a variety of services to carter for each class of society but in a special way not leaving behind the senior citizens.

“In fact when we looked at the market we saw rigidity in the provision of medical cover. Wemas is trying to bring in flexibility to members and most of our products if you look at them we are trying to fill the gaps which are left by other medical schemes.

"Take for example one of our products like the Pensioners Medical Scheme which covers people above 55 years old. Most medical schemes don’t cover people of these ages. So we are trying to bring a product to a segment of the market that has been neglected,” said Wella.

Wella said his organisation is a going concern and has put in place systems that take into account safety of the client’s premiums.

He added: “ In any insurance product is a risk even people who are aged below 50 years are risky in terms of business but Wemas has taken this route to service even those members classified as high risk. We have in place systems that will ensure members are receiving health services as and when on demand because we manage the premiums professionally as an established business.”

During the launch Wemas also disclosed that it has struck over 70 partnerships with key hospitals across the country for the convenience of those seeking medical cover at any given point in time.

The company is headquartered in Lilongwe with branches across the country. It first opened its doors on April 1, 2020.
