The Community of St. Egidio has intensified its efforts in reaching out to the poor to lessen their plight currently fanned by the COVID - 19 global health pandemic.

With support from well wishers, the Balaka based lay Christian movement has extended its reach to Liwonde in Machinga district where it is distributing food packs to the poor, while raising awareness on how to disrupt the further spread of the pandemic.

According to an official with the group responsible for Liwonde Community, Veronica Nyirenda, the establishment has so far distributed food packs and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to over 400 people including children and the elderly.

"We don't need to hide. The world needs us more now. We believe no one is too poor to help another," added Nyirenda.

A latest report released on Wednesday September 2 by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) shows up to 2.6 million Malawians will require humanitarian food aid between now and the next harvest period. Some 57,000 metric tonnes of food costing K14 billion will need to be bought to stave off the famine.
